The Social Media Landscape - In Numbers

ree

If you haven't noticed, I am a bit of a stats and numbers nerd. This week I thought I would round up a view interesting ones from Statista over the past few months.

With Elon's takeover of X, the platform has lost advertisers and revenue. Trump is allowed back in after a temporary ban. Meta continue to push it's competing platform Threads.

Below looks at the cost of advertising on the top 5 channels, and the average cost per thousand impressions.

Note: the spikes coming over November December.

Social Media Channels - Purveyors of "News"

X was a dominator of news and still has many of the top news influencers. However, Facebook, despite pulling back from news in favour of a TikTok play into video - consumers still look to Facebook to consolidate their feed of the top news stories.

Social Media Conversation Starters - or Brand Killers

Social media is about building your community of like minded citizens. And the algorithms don't always love a product and price play - but how "deep" do you go when it comes to topics of conversation in the social media landscape?

The generations are radically divided. Boomers and Gen X want them to stay clear. Millennials and Z's would prefer everyone who can make a stand, takes one and the power of your share-of-voice being used for good, not just profits.

Social Media is Just One Piece

Whilst parents tend to broadly blame "phones" and "social media" for damaging their kids wellbeing, the teens suggest a broader web of pieces that together can create their angst.

A Powerful Media Choice

In the end, the social media landscape has become the most powerful media channel in history; delivering news, content, opinions and of course tangible revenue for advertisers.

It's not going anywhere, but the platforms continue to evolve, with the stalwarts seeming to maintain the lion's share of voice and revenue.
